Rederiet Stenersen AS was incorporated in 1974 by Birger and Sigmund Stenersen. However, the
Stenersen family was at the time no novices to shipping, having been involved in coastal freight trade for several years.
Originating from the island of Bømlo on the South Western coast of Norway, the Stenersen family, like many other families in the area, were running a mixed household of farming and coastal shipping.
Still, it was after Birger and Sigmund moved to Bergen the growth of the company accelerated and since the foundation in 1974 Rederiet Stenersen AS has had owning interests in and managed some 30 odd vessels ranging from smaller coasters up to handy size bulkers engaged in world wide trade.
In 1987 Rederiet Stenersen AS was awarded a 10 year time charter contract with Norsk Hydro. Rederiet Stenersen then ordered the 15 000 dwt tanker "Trelsi", which was delivered in 1991. In the late 80s/early 90s Rederiet Stenersen expanded its fleet by acquiring second hand bulkers and container vessels which were all subject to trading under time charter parties. In 1996 the company was again awarded a 5+5 year time charter party with Norsk Hydro and ordered the MT "Dicksi" at Qiu-Xin Shipyard in China. Later the same year the company was awarded two more long term charter contracts for Statoil and ordered the two sister vessels "Sten Odin" and "Sten Tor" from Jiangnan Shipyard in China.
With the new orders from Norsk Hydro and Statoil - now Navion - it was strategically decided to dispose of all other shipping interests than that of tankers and focus on this segment.
Over the past years the number of new tanker vessels ordered by and under the operation of Rederiet Stenersen AS has increased and today the company commands a fleet of 18 purpose built chemical/product carriers ranging from 13-19 000 dwt,
